Anyone can be a victim - at any time. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religious, or gender. It affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Domestic abuse occurs in both opposite-sex and same-sex relationships and can happen to people who are married, living together or dating.

Most people are unaware that what is happening to them is abuse. Speaking with someone about the relationship is one way make this determination. Programs are available to help counsel victims, children and even batterers. Emergency shelter, legal aid, and many other services are specifically geared to help victims of domestic abuse.

And be prepared now, having the security of knowing you have put together your own Personal Safety Plan.   This will help you identify steps to better protect yourself and your children at home, school, work, and in the community.
